Children and adolescents with ADHD often struggle with executive function (EF) skills that impact learning, behavior, and daily life. While medication remains a common treatment, many families seek effective non‑pharmacological options. This review compares eight major EF intervention approaches using PRISMA standards and GRADE evidence ratings.

What the research shows:

  • Organizational Skills Training and Daily Report Cards offer the strongest real‑world improvements.

  • Exercise‑based programs consistently boost working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility.

  • Mindfulness interventions show moderate reductions in parent‑rated ADHD symptoms.

  • Cogmed improves trained working‑memory tasks but shows limited transfer to everyday functioning.

  • Evidence for computerized cognitive training and neurofeedback remains mixed or low‑quality.

  • Cultural adaptation across all programs is notably lacking.

Key takeaway:   No single program is universally superior. The strongest outcomes come from multi‑modal, context‑responsive approaches that blend behavioral supports, skills training, and physical activity. A comparative matrix and decision tool accompany the full review to help practitioners and families choose interventions aligned with their needs.
